Fourteen of us, and our local Ranger, met a Community Forester today and received instructions on how to prune and manage the Trees in the Orchard. We also gave him a tour of the Woodland Meadow.
Nine brave members turned up at the Barn on a cold and wet Monday. It had been hoped that we would be receiving a delivery of surfacing but no information about it had been received so we live in hope. After some deliberation it was decided to abandon any work for the morning as everywhere was very wet in the steady rain.
Fourteen workers arrived today, which allowed us to split into four groups as follows: We began the repair to the Round Walk above the Abbey Pond. We left it with the Revetments in place in readiness for the hardcore , which we hope to have next week. The hedge in Shene Field was trimmed The Cobbled Path was cleared of leaves, starting from where we finished last week The path at the back of the Driving Range was cleared and then the way down as far as the path to the White Steps. Four headed up to the Community Nursery with the intention of plotting the precise location of the various fruit/nut trees with the aim of assisting feeding and pruning in the future. They didn’t report how successful (or otherwise) they had been. The remaining nine members went to the new footpath and the groundsman began the surfacing transport from Beauchief Drive (see picture from David). Before beginning work, the thirteen workers that arrived today, began a lively discussion on a few relevant topics. The provision of the container as our new base. The recently announced power tools initiative The card Core we are expecting to be delivered imminently We all then went firstly to the Cobbled Path then to Little Wood Bank and cleared the wet debris from both paths, at both sites getting the path down to the hard core. The second Path will need a revisit to take clearing as far as Twentywell Lane. Holly was also cleared from the Bath that circuits
The group of eleven all went to the Nature Park to meet with a Ranger to discuss the position of our new container. It will be sighted in the compound/log storage area, as far away from prying eyes as we could make it. They will let us know when delivery is to be arranged and then we can arrange the transfer. We did ask for delivery on a Monday, if at all possible. As there are now two new Rangers, they may be able to offer more assistance to us in the future. We then went to the new pond
It may have been cold, damp and icy underfoot but that didn’t deter nine of us from turning up. We decided to go to the two Abbey Ponds, and clear the outflows of debris and generally tidy up the area. When we left all 3 outflows were flowing freely. As we walked back, up the Drive past the Nature Park, we could see the new Pond was at capacity and had overflowed, but what was pointed out to me was the top one had also done the same, and flowed into the new one. Sadly the level has dropped showing
Eleven arrived at the Gorse Patch and successfully burned everything we had cut in the previous three weeks. Many mince pies, rum truffles, flapjacks and associated goodies were consumed at breaktime. The Bocking Lane Park bench had almost been finished off on Thursday afternoon, and just needs a bit of pointing at the top slab joints. Gavin has put the new Coir matting in the Barn for us to fit on the 6th.
As last week, the fourteen who arrived today worked separately in three Groups. Five went to Beauchief Abbey Lane and finished the clearance of autumn debris from the path and roadside. They then went up to Little Wood Bank and removed a fallen tree branch, reported after the Meadow had been mown. Seven of us turned up at the Gorse Patch. We concentrated on the left side of the area where brambles had become dominant and where there was little sign of new growth from this previously cut area of gorse. Hope that clearing the brambles will allow new regeneration. The
Fourteen willing hands turned out today and like last week, we worked in three separate groups. Five went to the new pond and laid the coir matting; unfortunately we didn’t have enough, so more is to be ordered. The Group then went down to Beauchief Abbey Lane and continued the Leaf clearance. Seven of us worked on more gorse cutting this morning. There’s quite a pile ready for the Christmas burn. One more turned up to have a look after his session with the coir. A heavy shower after coffee caused an early departure for some. The two others built the Bocking Lane
The twelve of us split into three groups today. Eight went to the Gorse Patch and began the annual pruning as planned. The three bench builders had to dismantle one end of the new bench because it wasn’t quite as long as the combined top slabs that were left after the completion of the Stone Cross Field benches; so they didn’t make as much progress as they would have liked. The remaining Group member spent this morning clearing the leaves on Beauchief Drive from the Abbey to half way to the main road. This will need to be finished off
