Earlier in 2022 It was decided that Beauchief Environment Group should plant a tree to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth IISadly she passed away during her jubilee year. The Council has donated the tree, a Field Maple, which will be brought along and planted by the Council Forestry Team with the assistance of members of the Monday Working Group. Meet: 11.00 am at the Beauchief Nature Park meadow to celebrate the event.
A small group met up at Beauchief Abbey for our walk through the area to take in the colours and atmosphere of autumn. It had rained heavily in the morning and by afternoon it was dry and really quite foggy, but this added a mysterious feel to the landscape. We walked up Beauchief Drive and noticed that a few plants were still flowering along the hedge bottoms, and then on to Gulleys Wood Meadow where we hoped to find some fungi fruiting, notably waxcaps, where they had occurred many times in the past. Sadly, we couldn’t find any. We then followed
As we had not been able to have the Annual General Meetings as normal during the last couple of years, it had not been possible to show the photographs of working sessions and wildlife which had been sent in by members. It was decided to have a social get-together to show these photos and enjoy each other’s company. Diana had collated the many photos sent in during 2020 and 2021, mostly of the working sessions, but also some lovely and exceptional wildlife ones too. She also showed some photos from previous years reminding us of some of the projects we

Sunday 10 July 2022 On Sunday 10 July, Diana Holland (Chair of BEG) and myself completed a botanical survey of Gulley’s Meadow. Armed with a clip board with pen and paper and a flora to identify the species of plants we would come across, we set out along the left side of the meadow running parallel to the woods. It soon became apparent that many if not all species of plant had been affected by a relative lack of precipitation – visible signs such as shrivelled leaves and discoloration of the grasses. It was clear that the drought had particularly
Saturday 28 May 2022 About 20 people, including three young children, turned up for our birdsong walk down Beauchief Drive. The weather was kind – blue sky and plenty of sunshine. We started off with the tinkly, energetic sound of goldfinches, a beautiful bird that has become more common in recent years. Robins sang cheerily at regular intervals. Blue tits and great tits chattered here and there. A blackbird called out in alarm as we approached, while another sang in the distance later on. Many of us saw as well as heard a nuthatch. This bird is quite common in
15 February 2022 Toby Pillatt of SCC Forestry Team, led and organised this event, which in spite of the rain and muddy conditions, was great fun, a huge success and seemed to be enjoyed by all. In addition to familiar faces, it was good to see five members from Abbeydale Rotary Club (in high viz clothing), parents, grandparents, children aged from primary to secondary school, Greener Greenhill and Beauchief Environment Group followers. The community spirit of sharing anchors the whole sense of purpose. A big thanks to Toby, the supporting team, and to all who managed to come along to help towards
Saturday 5th February 2022 at Greenhill Library Eighteen members attended this year’s AGM, which was again held at Greenhill Library after a break of two years due to the Covid-19 restrictions. The evening opened with the formal AGM proceedings. The minutes of the 2020 AGM, held just before the lockdown, had been circulated and were approved. Damage to grass verges continues to be an issue. The Family Fun Day planned for Spring 2020 unfortunately had to be cancelled. The Chair, Diana, announced that Susan Hocking and Trudi Parsons had resigned from Committee membership and thanked them for their many years of hard work and support. She then went through
Beauchief is a beautiful area of Sheffield containing ancient woods, ponds and unspoilt meadows rich in wildlife, affording splendid views. It also includes the important historic sites of Beauchief Abbey and Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet. It is a place to wander through and enjoy, following its many footpaths.
